My students need Horizon PEM reversible fuel cells and small motors in order to complete their STEAM project of creating their kinetic art piece powered by water.
"Students today will work in careers not yet created. Ask them what problem they want to solve." As a project based learning school my students use growth mindsets and the 21st century skills to collaborate, create innovative products, while problem solving and communicating their learning.
Through understanding how a hydrogen fuel cell works, students will learn about the structure of an atom, ionic and covalent bonds, as well as the unique qualities of water molecules.
In addition student will collaborate in groups to create a visually appealing kinetic art piece that is powered by the hydrogen fuel cell. After designing and building their art piece they will create an educational podcast or video to explain the science and artistic expression behind their piece. Our final exhibition will be to the community where students will showcase their art work as well as their educational videos. The students will answer questions about the science and art principles that went into their design.
My Project
Water is such a unique substance and studying the properties of water will help our students really understand atoms as the building blocks of all substances we have here on Earth. The education kits will be key to the students building background knowledge about how the hydrogen fuel cells use the unique properties of water to release energy stored. Students will be able to see how the fuel cells work and how they produce both hydrogen and oxygen to later be formed back into water.
As the student put this technology to use in a practical application they will need the motors and fuel cells. The funding of this project will be key to allowing our student to create and showcase their kinetic art that is powered by the fuel cells.
As a project based learning school we pride ourselves on providing a relevant, engaging, technology based, rigorous education.
As students prepare themselves for a career that does not currently exist, they will need and education that provide them with the skills to succeed. Our number one limiting factor in going to the next level with our projects is funding. This funding will allow us to replace a project that currently has less technology and less relevant of an experience.
