Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My transitional kindergarten students are just turning 5. For many of them, this is their first experience in a school setting. Some of the students have special learning needs, and some are learning English for the first time. The majority of their families live below the poverty line, and rely on our free meal plan for their child's breakfast and lunch.

Our school is a high poverty, Title I school, with high expectations for all.

Many of my students go to daycare or to a grandparent's house after school to wait until their parents come home from work. Children with parents that are separated may go to mommy's house for part of the week and daddy's house for the rest of the week. They bring books, school supplies, snacks, jackets and lots of other items from home to school to afterschool care and then back to home. Those students without backpacks frequently lose items from all this traveling and shifting back and forth. Backpacks become worn from all this use and frequently need to be replaced.

My Project

I am requesting a sturdy, large backpack for each of my 24 students. These backpacks are large enough to hold the belongings they need to bring to school, as well as everything that needs to be brought home. If you could see what some of them look like at the end of the day: trying to hold on to their homework folders, jackets, finished work, water bottles and other items, picking up one item only to drop another!

Having a new and durable backpack will give my students ownership in the idea that school is an important part of their daily routine.

They will learn that it is important to be organized and responsible for your own supplies and daily necessities. They will love the bright colors and have pockets to keep everything secure. The strong shoulder straps will ensure that the backpacks are comfortable and will last for years to come.

Backpacks are a necessity that not every family can afford for their children. With your help, a wonderful group of students will not have to worry about losing their belongings as they travel to school. Burlington, we need your help! Will you come to our rescue by granting us these backpacks?
