This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
More than once I've said, "It's time to clean up and go home!" and they say, "Already? We're reading!"
My students have an amazing love of reading.
Our school serves a diverse population of high-poverty students. Many of my students come from families that do not have many books in the home - let alone books that are "just right" for their reading ability.
In the first few weeks of school, I have been gathering a list of books the kids have been asking for. I would love to get the stories they want to read in our room. This grant will get at least one "requested" text for each of my students in hopes to continue to grow their love of reading.
My Project
My students have been sharing their reading habits and goals with me for the past few weeks.
I am noticing that there are specific titles and trends of books that are not currently in our room.
The books in this project are all from students - what they like to reread, what they'd like to try and what they think will help them build reading stamina. I am following "The Book Whisperer" philosophy in that students who read more become better readers - so let's get them books that they want! When the books arrive, each student will be matched up with their request and have the opportunity to be the first one to read one they asked for. I cannot wait!
