My volleyball players need seven good practice volleyballs and a storage cart.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Harris's classroom raised $550
This project is fully funded
I coach our high school volleyball team. We are in a high-need community, and we are pioneering new strategies in our district, to change the "drop out" culture and make sure our graduates are ready for college. We have a great track record with obtaining scholarships for our players to play at the college and community college level. Our goals are to enjoy the game, make it a positive team experience, and be able to use the sport to fund our players' goals for higher education.
We currently have almost 20 female students who stay after school 2 1/2 hours a day to practice volleyball. (And I think the number will grow in the future.) The girls are dedicated to improving their skills, are staying out of trouble, and maintaining very good grades. They are dedicated, but we have very little money to buy equipment or uniforms. A well-financed sports program might have 100 balls to use in practice--we don't even have six good ones, but we use everything we've got, including balls that have part of their cover falling off, splitting at the seams, losing air, and bulging in the wrong places. Our ball cart and practice net are held together with duct tape--and the duct tape is not working very well on the ball cart! But we maintain our equipment, repair it, and use it until there is no use left in it.
We need a lot of things! But right now, the most beneficial things would be several more practice balls (which can also double as game balls) and a new ball cart. More balls will allow the players to maximize their practice time, being able to make hit after hit, focusing on their form without having to be interrupted. Girls will be able to practice fundamental skills in pairs, getting the most out of each session. Experienced coaches know that the more repetitions of hits, the better the players will be.
Your help will be such a boost to these hardworking ladies! They have very little access to outside resources, so school teams provide exercise, teamwork, leadership training, a positive peer group, and a reason to stay on track in school. It is unfortunate when a lack of resources limits our students abilities to compete with other players across the state. This equipment will revolutionize our ability to run drills that will increase their skills, ramp up the enjoyment of the game, as well as increasing their opportunities to be noticed by college recruiters.
