Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students at my school come from all over the world. Many of them are first-generation Americans or immigrants themselves. Most live in the neighborhood area and attend our general admission school. Over 95% of our students are from low-income families and received free lunch. None of them have ever played organized volleyball before coming to high school. Playing sports creates a new family for these students, teaches them how to be good people and responsible, teaches them grit, teaches them how to best manage their time, and so many other lessons! Sports are a way to get ahead in life and further their education and go to college in many situations.
My Project
This year we are excited to be expanding the boys volleyball program at my school by adding a freshman team. Success at the higher levels is strongly aided from experience at early levels.
While it is wonderful that we are adding teams to our program, we are unable to provide them with the proper equipment to play.
My school is unable to provide us with any volleyballs. Each year we use what we have, lose some in ceilings at away games, and lose some to general wear and tear.
Volleyballs are the most basic piece of equipment we need, and without it our season will be a constant struggle.
