Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Approximately 160,000 children stay home from school everyday, afraid to go because they are victims of bullying. Frequently dismissed as "Kids will be kids", these experiences leave students feeling belittled, helpless, worthless, and often times, scarred for life.

Our students attend a large community school, wherein ours is one of 6 independent, pilot schools.

Located in one of the most densely populated parts of Southern California, our school is a shining star in the second largest public school district in the nation. Our population is comprised of students and staff from mixed ethnic backgrounds. Eighty-five percent of our students live at or below the poverty level. Nestled in a high crime enclave, our students are resilient, and strive to be successful, college bound, productive participants in our ever changing society. Our school spans from kindergarten through 12th grade. We emphasize the importance of the self, of others, and of community. As such, our students, families, and faculty share a culture of respect, social justice, and love of learning. Our students are inspiring, determined, resilient, and most importantly, they are the future!!

My Project

Students should feel safe at school. Educators cannot control life off campus, but we can and do strive to create an environment where students thrive and grow. At our school, we prevent bullying, by teaching our students and teachers how to respond to acts of bullying or harassment. In conjunction with anti-bullying month in October, we recently concluded a week long series of events with the theme No Bullies Allowed! (aka NBA!). Our NBA! club has decided to keep the theme going year round. As such, we would like the opportunity to take all of our older students (8th-12th grade) to see the movie "Bully". One cannot help but be moved and inspired to promote change after watching this movie. It prompts dialog; change. Our student leaders feel that the up close and personal experiences of students in the film will cause students to reflect upon how they treat others and respond to bullying acts. Bus transportation will allow our students to travel safely to the movie theater.

When our students and teachers view the movie "Bully" as a community, we will then reflect together about how we are all affected by bullying.

Our dialog will inspire a cohesive focus in perspective, which will increase empathy, and embolden change. This change in individuals and in our school community will affect others on our campus, in our families, in our community. Experiencing this movie will empower victims and bystanders, humble bullies, and inspire our community to stand together.
