Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
These 21 students are in a Peer-Counseling elective course at our high school. We are asking for materials that we will use in a presentation we are planning to give at local elementary schools. Specifically, we would like T-shirts to wear and materials to go in a care package to give each student.
Every week, we spend time sharing personal experiences. When the topic of bullying came up, it was especially powerful. Through tears and pain, we discovered a common thread in our experiences: elementary school. One student asked "why don't we go to elementary schools and tell them about the harm that comes from bullying?" We jumped on the idea and began planning our anti-bullying message that we would like to take to our local elementary schools. If even one student is positively impacted by our presentation, we will consider it a success.
The most important skills that students will develop from this project are self-confidence, organization, leadership, communication and empathy. Students will acquire self-confidence and courage when they present to a gymnasium full of students about the important topic of bullying. They have already begun working on their organization skills as they have been designing the presentation from beginning to end including activities and materials for a student care package, gummy bears, bags and ribbons, they will hand out to students. Students will develop leadership skills as they endeavor to capture the attention of younger students and attempt to create a culture of empathy and heroism in the elementary schools. Students will need to work on effective communication skills in order to give a dynamic presentation that is free of spelling or grammatical errors. Finally, students will need to show empathy as they encounter students who have been or are being bullied.
In Their Own Words
Peer counseling is a new class offered at Chowchilla High School. We train to help resolve conflicts with students who have a problem with other students or an interpersonal conflict. We promote anti-bullying and we want younger generations to know the hardships bullying comes with. As a class we are arranging a presentation for our local schools, sharing our own stories to help them understand the harm of bullying. Our goal is to prepare them for High School and create an anti-bullying culture.
We will use our Anti-Bullying presentation as a strong message to stop the problems which we have concluded mainly revolve around elementary schools. Having the courage to stand in front of an entire room filled with young minds just ready to be influenced by our words will give us the responsibility to be role models. We hope our message will change the way the students view bullying and will give them the ability to stand up against bullies.
Our community is overwhelmed by the fatal bullying phenomena and it has been a silent killer in ours and several other various locations for years. Bullying is a serious issue that claims the lives of innocent victims every year who give up and choose taking their own lives over bullying. This is very important to our community because we are so tight-knit. The Peer Counseling program plans to attack this problem head on and save more lives, while being someone’s hero. Please help our cause.
