My students need to see the movie "Bully." It is currently playing in theaters and will help to reinforce our lessons on the need for bully prevention in schools.
Students today are facing bullying more than ever before. Not only are they bullied at school, but they are also experiencing bullying through cyberspace, texting, and Facebook. Whether the bully or the victim, they will benefit from seeing "Bully."
The students who will attend the movie are students in grades 4 through 6 at an inner city school.
They attend a public elementary school in a very large, urban district within the state of Pennsylvania. Our school is made up of 41.3% white, 26.2% African American, 13% Latino, 11.1% other, and 8.5% Asian students. 73.7% of our students come from economically disadvantaged homes.
My Project
Through the use of the documentary, "Bully," students will get to see first hand accounts of bullying and the effects of it on the victims. This will allow for follow up activities that allow students to discuss, write about, and debate connections to their own lives, the lives of other students within the school, the administrators and teachers at our school, and the school bus drivers/aides. They will begin to recognize changes that need to be made and will be able to work together to begin making that change.
This project is so important, because in order for changes to occur with the current bully situation students need to start taking accountability for their actions.
They need to start to see that their actions have an affect on more than just the victim and that we can begin to make a difference. If each one of us holds ourselves accountable for our own actions perhaps we will begin to see a change within our school and eventually across society.
