My Students

Do you remember a time you felt like a victim of a bully? Maybe it was physical or maybe verbal. The feelings linger for years. We want to help our students stop bullying in our school, but also develop skills for later in life.

Our school is in an urban area that has increasing poverty and social issues.

The parents are hard working and supportive of the school. They are also concerned about the growing issues of bullying. Students see bullying everywhere. Growing up in the technology age, bullying is changing forms and harder to spot. It now also can live forever in the social media sites. As a school counselor I spend a great deal of time in the classroom teaching conflict resolution and bully prevention. In fourth grade we do an extensive study of the Civil Rights movement and how change was made in non-violent ways. I am hoping that our school can learn how to manage their conflicts throughout life and deal effectively with bullies. I seek to show them that bullying also comes from those that sit by and watch others do the active bullying. When we let our friends suffer and do not support them, we are part of the problem.

My Project

We would like to use the book "Bullying in Schools" to set a framework for discussion on bullying. Having a class set of books will allow the students to be actively engaged in studying the material and discussing it. We use a lot of role plays to help students understand the concepts. Using the other books on bullying will help further the student's understanding. We also will tie these discussions to our weekly character videos that we watch as a school. The next step we are implementing is a writing piece. Students will have writing journals that will used to journal about character and bullying topics. We plan to use the NOOKcolor to help motivate students that need individual instruction and reinforcement. In the media driven age students are more likely to be engaged when using this type of media. The NOOK cover is important to keep the reader in good condition. There are many resources we can utilize on the NOOK that will help students learn these important life skills.

Bullies can have a very traumatic impact on students.

When students realize that they contribute to the problem by not standing up or by laughing at bullying, they can learn to help stop the bullying behavior. Learning about the dynamics of bullying helps everyone develop an awareness of how to help the bully. It is also important to learn these skills before they enter to social media scene. As a counselor I will utilize this program in all classes. I appreciate any donation to help. Thank you!
