My Students
I have eight students in a K-2 autism classroom. Most of my students have limited verbal skills and do not communicate much on their own. They have varying levels of academic skills and the majority are working on learning basic skills as well as communication and social skills.
We have a structured routine throughout the day with many hands-on and independent activities.
We have a morning routine that students look forward to every day, independent work time where students practice working by themselves on skills they have mastered, group time to work on academic skills and writing, story time to work on comprehension, math, science and art time where we create creative and colorful projects using construction paper and following picture directions. They have made so much progress so far this year with academic, social and communication skills.
My Project
My students have difficulty communicating and interacting with each other and need a variety of engaging activities to practice working on social and play skills. Activities that encourage working together to create a product also build up fine motor and creative thinking skills. My students are in need of manipulatives that will allow them to use their creativity and critical thinking skills to fit pieces together while also learning how to interact and share with peers.
The materials in this project will ensure that my students have tools they need to work together and creatively build structures.
My students will be able to fit different pieces together to create shapes and structures. They will learn spatial reasoning skills as they use trial and error to find out what fits together and what does not. These materials will be used in free play exploration so students have the opportunity to figure out how to use the manipulatives and also in more structured play so they have to communicate using pictures, signs or words what pieces they need to build what they want.
We work on a variety of skills in our classroom and most of my students are also working on learning colors, shapes, counting and sorting. All of these materials can be used to work on those skills as well. As my students learn and master skills they need to be able to generalize those skills using a variety of activities so they don't just memorize how to do a task. This project will provide multiple activities for continued practice and maintenance of many skills students are learning.
