My Students
My students are a diverse group of kids from the East NY section of Brooklyn growing up in low-income families. My students have chosen the fully remote platform for school this year. Many of the students come from local shelters and need extra love, care, and support at school. My students are creative, thoughtful innovative, and full of questions! They absolutely love hands-on, active, engaging projects and challenges that allow them to think outside the box to find solutions! They come to school each day ready to try new things and take brave chances in order to grow both personally and academically. Truly, they are my inspiration!
Every child in my classroom absolutely loves learning, and my students are becoming enthusiastic learners.
In the classroom, we incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and alternative seating and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met, right where they are!
They are truly an incredible group, and I am so lucky and thankful to have a new group of learners that are excited and ready to learn each year!
My Project
Working with my students my goal is to have them be able to solve basic problems quickly and accurately so they can focus their mental energies on more difficult higher-level math skills, like problem-solving.
Mastering math fluency and number sense are critical to setting students up for success in future math classes.
When students have the ability to perform mathematical problems quickly and accurately without relying on memorization, and truly understand the relationships between numbers and how those numbers are affected by mathematical operations, they have a strong knowledge foundation that can be built upon in higher grade levels.
The hand2mind Daily Math Fluency Kit will help me to build number sense in 10 minutes a day with Math Talks and Number Strings which is similar to Number Talks. The kit includes 180 days of instruction designed to develop numeracy and the ability to use mathematical relationships to reason with numbers.
My goal is to engage them through the virtual classroom with these tools to help them succeed in math.
