My Students
My students are eager to be on the drumline this coming marching season. However, the school has a limited amount of equipment. I do not have enough sticks, mallets, and straps to utilize every drum and drummer that we have.
The students here are part of a very small school in a very small South Carolina town.
The 3 schools in this district, one elementary, one middle, and one high school, are all connected in one "educational center." Our marching band is made up of 8th-12th graders. This year, we have about 30 members of the band. More than 10 of these members are on the drumline.
My Project
Everyday in class or marching rehearsal, my students and I are constantly searching for a matching pair of drumsticks or mallets. Most of the time the students end up having to use the wrong mallets for the type of drum they're playing, or a mismatched pair. When we play in pep rallies or football games, the students have to carry their drums in with just their hands and set them in the bleachers. If we had drum straps, they would be able to carry and play their drums on their bodies. This would not only be easier on the students, but it would give our band a more uniform look as we enter the gymnasium or football stadium.
Donating to this project will prove to the students in our band that they deserve a quality music education and that they are worth helping.
Music is something positive that these kids can be involved in. It gives them a sense of self-success and pride. Having the right equipment is the first step to our success.
