I teach at an elementary school in Hilo, Hawaii. My students represent many different cultures and economic backgrounds. Most of my students are "disadvantaged" due to economic backgrounds.
I'll be moving from a 3rd grade classroom to a 2nd grade classroom next school year.
Our school has been using a state mandated reading and math curriculum. Many of our students are struggling, especially with the reading curriculum. Many of our students have never left the Hawaiian islands; therefore, their personal experiences are very limited. Our students experience difficulty relating to the stories shared in the reading curriculum, because of their limited exposure to different climates and cultures.
Although my students may be facing challenges in their lives, they are always eager to learn new things!
My Project
Scholastic News magazines provide interesting articles on science, social studies and heath related topics. Each issue has a theme/topic that relates to each month of the year. Students learn about many different topics throughout the year which helps to reach the diverse learning in my classroom.
My second graders are in need of supplemental nonfiction reading materials.
Scholastic News articles provide wonderful news articles that engage young readers to want to learn what's happening in their world. I use the articles to help teach text features of nonfiction material, while increasing vocabulary and comprehension skills as well.
Our classroom is also in need of our grade level common core standards so that it can be visible for all students to see. The plastic containers will be used to store our Scholastic News Magazines and the ink will used for our classroom color printer.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
