I teach at an elementary school in Hilo, Hawaii and my students represent many different cultures and economic backgrounds. Most of my students are "disadvantaged" due to economic backgrounds.
I'll be moving from a 3rd grade classroom to either a 2nd or 5th grade classroom next school year.
Our school has been using a state mandated reading and math curriculum. Many of our students are struggling, especially with the reading curriculum. Many of our students have never left the Hawaiian islands; therefore, their personal experiences are very limited. Our students experience difficulty relating to the stories shared in the reading curriculum because of their limited exposure to different climates and cultures.
Although my students may be facing challenges in their lives, they are always eager to learn new things!
My Project
All of the classroom supplies that are listed will be used to set up my new classroom that I will be moving into in August. The plastic bins will used to store all of our math and science supplies, so that they can be kept clean and organized.
Students learn in multiple ways; therefore, using a variety of math manipulatives will help to increase their learning abilities and their self confidence!
The base ten materials will help to improve their place value skills and the privacy shields will be used for those students who need help staying focused on their own work rather than the work of others.
Students enjoy using white boards to learn various skills and concepts, and it keeps them engaged in the learning process!
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
