This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Ms. Capellan, you've made me love writing" if those aren't those most satisfying words, I don't know what are. Witnessing the joy of a 3rd grade student discovering a passion is thrilling as a teacher. The students and teachers of our school have formed a family; we trust in each other's passions and determination to help each other grow and persevere. We don't have much but we have each other! Our students deserve tools that match their hard work.
Our school is home to hundreds of students coming from low-income communities, but their struggles do not stop their eagerness and tenacity to grow and succeed.
Located in Washington Heights; upper manhattan our school serves students in grades PK-5. Minority enrollment is 99% of the student body (majority Hispanic), which is more than the state average of 55%. These are all numbers that tell you just a tiny bit of our students.
These numbers do not tell you that our students are dancers, singers, drummers, actors, explorers, innovators, mini scientists, artists, who aspire to be teachers, doctors, entrepreneurs, architects, scientists and much more. They are our future and together we can give them the push start they need!
My Project
I can already picture these materials bringing a smile to my students' faces. Every year we get students who are newly arrived from other countries and whom are learning the English Language. These materials will serve as a support to build and strengthen language skills.

This is the goal, to support all students no matter what reading or language proficiency level they are in. The headphones and tablet will support those students that are below grade level reach proficiency in letter and sound recognition. Reading comprehension tasks will be a fun way to strengthen the skills that those students on grade level already possess.
