Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Playing soccer is more than just passing a ball and making goals, it is a pathway to connection and to exploring a new community of people from all over the world. Just ask any player about their first practice and how it felt to be part of something even if you didn't speak the same language as the other players.
My student-athletes are all recently arrived newcomers who are learning English.
They have been in the United States for less than four years. They come from a wide variety of countries such as Brazil, Haiti, The Dominican Republic and Senegal. On our team you might hear cheers and shouts in many languages such as Haitian Creole, French, Spanish, or Wolof. We see this diversity as an incredible opportunity, but one that sometimes needs additional support beyond what other public school athletic programs may require.
My Project
Our team culture focuses on helping our players to feel part of a community, and for many of our newest players, to feel welcome in their new country! As the weather gets cooler, training pants become necessary for players to prepare for playing, and our school-provided uniforms do not include them.
Our girls often only have jeans rather than more sports-friendly gear for warming up prior to play and so these training pants will not only help our players to feel more unified, but they will help them to feel what it's like to warm up in comfort!
We look forward to bringing our international team even closer together through this outward symbol of their unity, while also helping to keep them healthy.
