This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Teaching social/emotional skills can be challenging to my students in their Humanities classroom. They are asked to reflect on their choices they make each day and to work through social/emotional challenges. The challenge can be hard and the use of these games will help make this a fun process.
My students are in Special Education and diagnosed with social/emotional disabilities that classify them as Affective Needs.
They struggle with using social/emotional skills to interact with other high school students, be successful in a classroom setting, and make positive choices when faced with challenging situations. This often leads them to making harmful choices that leads to severe discipline actions. The students come to class wanting to learn how to use social/emotional support tools to help them successfully navigate the challenges they experience in and out of school. They often get bored with the normal classroom material and relate better to interactive lessons, lessons that relate to their life and their struggles, and lessons that they can participate in. These students are committed to be successful in class, but often do not make the correct choices as they have not learned basic social/emotional skills. These students struggle with high school social/emotional events.
My Project
My students participate in Humanities each day to learn social/emotional skills. Through games such as Equipped for Life, Therapy the Game, The Ungame, Mad Dragon: An Anger Control Card Game, Table Topics, and Social Skills Board Games, they will be able to learn skills in a fun and interactive way with their fellow classmates. These games will create a safe environment that will allow them to learn these skills, laugh with each other, and interact socially in a game atmosphere. They will also use these games to explore their own challenges and be able to work though emotional feelings and learn tools to incorporate, as they transition to other classrooms in high school. The games will provide a relaxed classroom culture that will help us as a group learn about and discuss social/emotional challenges. The students will have fun while learning about the challenges they struggle with on a daily basis. They will be able to reflect on the games when participating in group sessions in class and participating in other classroom activities. They will be able to share their experiences with others to reinforce their learning.
These students will have a better chance at being successful in high school and prepare them for life as an adult.
These students struggle with making good choices in order to work along with others in their classroom. Having more interactive tools, they can learn the skills needed to help prepare them for college, a life in the workforce, or military, as they become adults in their communities. These games will provide an interactive way for these students to learn the skills they will remember.
