This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are dreamers. They are future scientists, teachers, and artists. Our class is a place where we celebrate together, and help when others need a friend.
I teach in an urban school where 98% eat free lunch and everyone eats free breakfast in the classroom.
Thankfully, our families volunteer to distribute food baskets. Book Trust donates $7 in books for every student monthly. My students have big dreams, and people who support them. They just need some resources to encourage hard work and kindness at school.
My Project
These games will fuel our class economy, and the Chromebooks will support students learning to read. I requested several games so they stay interesting with periodic rollout, and motivate for many years to come. I also requested a few classic books I teach yearly to replace tattered paperbacks.
My students need joyful experiences and access to technology so they can beat the cycle of poverty.
Through just a few minutes of fun, I can maximize every minute in class. When they have a goal to work for, students try harder. Incentives help me create a motivating environment and caring community. Chromebooks will help students work independently while I teach guided reading. Roughly a third of my class have academic disabilities, and need support at their level. I use Moby Max for leveled math, Pebble Go and Tumble Books for read alongs. For early writers, I dream of using Dragon Text-to-Speech. I also use Google Classroom for enrichment projects, but lack the resources for advanced and struggling students to have technology at the same time. Finally, students experiencing trauma, neglect, or uncertainty use Calm.com for deep breathing and awareness exercises.
Little things like games and technology go a long way towards successful, happy experiences at school. With your help I can make that possible for all students.
