Help me give my students books where they can see themselves reflected as protagonists, as well as books where they can learn more about empathy and that being different from everyone else is a great thing!
My students are such hard workers. They always try their hardest in the classroom, even when it is a new skill or strategy. They also enjoy reading chapter books aloud as a class and participating in fun activities such as escape rooms and project-based learning.
My Project
Reading chapter books aloud together is one of the students’ favorite activities. These two books in particular were chosen specifically with my 5th graders in mind. The Watsons Go to Birmingham - 1963 tells the story of an African-American family traveling South during the Civil Rights Movement. The majority of my students are African-American and this book offers an insight into the Civil Rights Movement from the perspective of someone their own age. Wonder tells the story of a young boy who has a disfigured face and how he adapts to fifth-grade at a new school after being homeschooled his whole life. This book will help my students with their social-emotional learning skills, particularly building empathy through social awareness.
