This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Something as simple as having a sharpened pencil is causing chaos in our morning routine. Also, my students lack the knowledge in our American History and the world around them needed to become productive citizens when they grow up. My students do not even know the basic functions of their body.

My 5th grade students are from various minority backgrounds.

They are good kids who just need a teacher to show them how truly wonderful they are. Many are eager to learn despite their surroundings. Some students come from tragic backgrounds, are hungry, unkept and are still expected to perform at their fullest potential every day, even when they are not feeling their best. School-wide we are desperately trying to motivate our students to learn in order to keep them off the streets. Our school is nestled in a poverty stricken community with limited educational resources. About 95% of our students receive free our reduced lunch. We do not have a PTA and therefore, teachers are forced to pay for some school supplies themselves. We are in the process of enriching our classroom libraries so that we can promote a love of reading during our newly implemented Reader's Workshop literacy block.

My Project

With the help of DonorsChoose, students will start their day off by having sharpened pencils ready to use when they enter the class. The Human Body book will bait kids to learn about their bodies. The Time For Kids (TFK) magazine will provide rich literature that will open learning opportunities for students to learn about people, events and things that they have little to no knowledge about. TFK will also assist my students in higher order thinking skills and will broaden their global connections with the world around them. Using TFK, students will be about to practice vocabulary content, reading skills and strategies learned with real-world literature. My 5th graders love to be read to and acquiring the chapter books on the American History will provide countless hours of modeled reading fluency and open conversations on how America came to be, the America as we know. Students who have a basic understanding of our American History are more likely to grow up to be concerned citizens.

Any donations my students receive will have a major impact.

Hopefully, students eventually become interested in ideas, events, people and situations they may never have first-hand knowledge of via their natural surroundings. I hope to inspire my students to step out of their comfort zones to learn about the past and connect it to the present and future, so that they can make more informed decisions about the world around them. These ideas can start by simply having a sharpened pencil!
