My Project
Steven, Omar, and Emily, 3 of my students asked me to be an advisor to a skateboarding club they were hoping to start. I said yes, even though the club seemed like a long shot. The 3 students were not deterred. They met with students of all backgrounds and interests and found that there was a excitement and enthusiasm for a skateboarding club. 57 students signed the petition and filled out a form sharing personal information to join the club. Of these 57 students, 70% had never skated. The three club originators and myself are excited to introduce students of all levels to the joy of skateboarding.
The enthusiasm of the club creators has led to us having 15 students accepted to attend 3 sessions at Golconda Skatepark in Brooklyn where we will learn, through Chill NYC's programming, social-emotional skills that will help us persist through life's challenges and then apply those skills to skateboard lessons.
We will be done with these 3 sessions on May 18th and would like to continue with the momentum towards having a skate club that meets regularly at our school. Numerous students in our 2,202 population have their own boards, but there are many students that don't have boards. We'd like to give everyone, including those who don't have the means to buy a board, the opportunity to practice skateboarding.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
