Building Reading Foundations

My Project

To achieve their reading goals, my students need a foundation in phonemic awareness. This is the ability to identify and manipulate individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words. The National Reading Panel stated, "Teachers should recognize that acquiring phonemic awareness is a means rather than an end. Phonemic awareness is not acquired for its own sake but rather for its value in helping learners understand and use the alphabetic system to read and write" (National Reading Panel, 2000, 2-6).

Students are ready to build phonemic proficiency at the start of the year.

These engaging materials will be used in small groups to scaffold and support student learning. These materials will help students make connections as they learn to read!
