Building Readers with Engaging Middle School Novels

My Project
Our high school students are ready to make a difference beyond our classroom walls. They are passionate, empathetic, and looking for meaningful ways to contribute to their community. Many of them have younger siblings or neighbors who struggle with reading and want to take on the role of mentors to support literacy development in younger students.
The Community We’re Serving: Our student mentors will be working with elementary students from our feeder school and students in our school's after-school program.
Many of these younger students come from homes where English is not the primary language or where there is limited access to books at home. This project will serve both our school community and our local neighborhood, helping build a culture of literacy that reaches beyond the classroom.
The Student-Led Activity:
High school students will lead a weekly “Reading Buddies” program where they will read aloud to younger students, facilitate simple comprehension activities, and encourage reading for enjoyment. They will also create “Take-Home Reading Kits” with books and activities for the younger readers to enjoy with their families. Our student mentors will take ownership of organizing the sessions, selecting engaging texts, and designing extension activities like drawing prompts or “make your own storybook” kits.
