Help me give my students the gift of literacy! These reader sets will provide my students with books that quickly build their knowledge of sight words and reading strategies to move them ahead toward lifelong success.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach ELA to roughly fifty 5th grade students in the Bronx who all qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, have special needs, learn English as a second language, and/or reside in temporary housing. Year after year, I am surprised and awestruck at how resilient my students are, despite the many challenges that they and their families face. They continually remind me that anything truly is possible with hard work, a team to support you, and a dream to achieve.
I want to provide my students with the support they need and deserve.
Every child deserves a classroom that is welcoming, that is equitable, and that provides them with the tools they need to succeed in today's changing and fast-paced world. I would love for my students to look forward to coming to school, to get excited about reading and writing, and opening up the world through the power of words.
My Project
I teach 5th grade students that come to school with a host of challenges. One of the biggest challenges is students who enter 5th grade with pre-emergent reading skills. As a classroom that is meant for upper grade students, it is incredibly difficult to find enough resources for these children who want to read, but simply can't. Research shows that students at all levels need to read as much as possible to become proficient readers but there are not enough texts to share amongst these students, making it very difficult to meet their needs.
I wish to provide my students with a wider variety of both fiction and non-fiction texts that will give them the chance to read many books, exposing them to a wealth of sight words and content, while helping them build strong foundational reading skills.
These easy readers will give students instant access to their very own section of the library where they may actually get a choice in what they read, instead of being forced to read the few books I was able to borrow and beg for from around the building. I know that my special needs students, students with interrupted education, and my students learning English will greatly benefit from a myriad of texts to learn with. Not only that, this project will benefit students for years to come!
