Building Our Way to Social Emotional Well Being

Help me give my students books for social emotional development, a flower garden to learn to build relationships, squishy toys to help with calming, tables to help with social distancing and an organization unit to store materials.

My Students

I am currently a fully self-contained preschool special education teacher in a Title I elementary school in Hawaii. More than half of my students are from low income families. I have preschool students with various disabilities and delays including autism, fine motor, gross motor, speech/communication, behavior management, social emotional needs developmental delays and medically fragile.

My students are full of energy, loving, caring, spirited and eager to learn group.

My Project

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected each and every classroom due to the need for social distancing for the safety of all. My students are not able to parallel play, share toys and talk during lunch. This has been a stressful change. I see my students wanting to navigate toward each other, but without each student being required to wear a mask or unable to wear a mask due to a medical/disability reason it is not safe.

My goal is to provide my students with tools they can use to manage their social emotional well being in the classroom as well as in their homes with their families.

I would like to provide my students with social and emotional lessons through books and building materials, to have individual tables to ensure their safety and a storage unit to store the activities. I would like to create an area in our classroom with materials to help my students have a calm place to destress with items such as squishy toys and be part of contributing and building something as a class even though they are not able to participate next to each other. We could start by providing lessons by teaching social stories such as empathy, compassion, emotion management, being positive, building relationships, being accepting of others differences and more.

To help my students build relationships I would like my students to build products like a plastic garden we can put together individually, but see it joined together to create a beautiful garden of flowers with a display of sayings like “be nice”, “be happy”, “be caring”, “be accepting” and we build together”. We could also build a wall of emotional pineapples to show how each student feels, discuss their feelings and then problem solve a resolution.
