This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have a class full of energetic, curious and compassionate first-graders. My students love to explore, ask questions, read, play and dance. They are learning about community involvement and always find ways to brighten each others' day. They love helping and learning.
Our school is located near downtown Los Angeles, California.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am eager to provide my students with quality and equitable learning materials and opportunities. I look forward to promoting creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My Project
First grade is a huge year for adding and subtracting! In Room 49 we build strong number sense through Counting Collections. Research shows that students need to manipulate objects to build upon their mathematical thinking. Through Counting Collections, students have the opportunity to count various objects in meaningful ways (by 10s, 5s, 2s, even 7s!). Students can be creative and build on their individual knowledge. They are free to explore while strengthening their number sense.
Using manipulatives to access curriculum strengthens students' confidence and builds their identities as mathematicians.
Having access to a variety of manipulatives (i.e. 120 charts, number lines, various counters, games) will engage students and increase addition/subtraction fluency. All students deserve an math-rich environment. Please help us flourish as critical thinkers!
