Building Our Music Library

My students need a cozy corner music library nook complete with rug, bean bag chair, personal CD players and headphones, and of course, books!

My Students

"Ago?" "Ame!" ("Are you ready to learn?" "Yes, we are ready to learn!") My music students are familiar with this call and response which, borrowed from the folkloric traditions of West Africa loosely translates to "Listen!" and "I am listening." The students at my school are comfortable with multiple languages. Mandarin, Spanish, Urdu, Russian, Arabic, and Uzbeck make up the first languages of most of my students. Some are still learning English, but that doesn't stop them from having fun in the new music room!

It is no doubt their capacity to understand two or more languages attracts them to music.

A community of immigrants, the students have a wonderful opportunity to bring a bit of their musical culture to our school, sharing their unique experiences and learning to appreciate others' contributions. Our school is large, around thirteen hundred students, with seventy percent of them qualifying for free lunch. This year, our music department received the best gift music students could ever get - a music room! No longer will the music teachers have to push into the crowded classrooms bringing only as much as we can carry. Now students have a large space dedicated entirely to music!

My Project

This year we are very fortunate to have our very own music room! In addition to technology and listening centers, I would like to feature a small music library. This little nook will have books for all my students from Kindergarten to 5th grade! Eventually I hope to have a large range of fiction and non-fiction books, but for now we are starting small.

With a cozy library nook, my students will have a place to dig deeper into their individual music interests.

The colorful rug and comfy bean bag will create an inviting environment for students. Many of the books come with CDs and the portable CD players and headphones will allow my students to listen on their own to the CD that corresponds with the book they are reading. While I hope to grow this library, I am starting with a couple of books about the orchestra, famous composers, as well as others that I hope will interest my students across the 6 grade levels. It is my hope that this library will allow for student choice and foster genuine interest in music!
