My students need leveled books in English and their native languages. We are building a much needed multilingual and multi-level classroom library that will support all.

My Students
English learners in my classes are industrious, curious, and grateful for any and every opportunity to learn. Each of these students has his/her own unique set of learning needs. With access to leveled books in English and other languages they can develop their bi-literacy and explore content.
My fourth and fifth grade students, as a group, speak twelve different languages, have varying degrees of proficiency in the native languages, and are all English learners.
They have varying degrees of proficiency in English and are all required to learn a new language while simultaneously learning science, math, social studies, and ELA. It's a lot of hard work for everyone!
My Project
My students make use of our local library's small collection of bilingual books. However, they will benefit from a broader collection of leveled books in English and other languages in our classroom. These texts will enable beginner English learners to learn content while building literacy in English and their native language.
Students will use this class library to build their knowledge of content-area concepts in science, social studies, English language arts, and mathematics. They will also use the library to explore new topics and further develop their native language literacy. Finally, our classroom library will provide students with the materials they need to develop as independent readers.
Currently, our classroom library is very limited in number and range.
This project will provide our classroom with a diverse collection non-fiction leveled texts in English. A rich collection of high-interest books will enable students to build their content-area knowledge and literacy in English.
