My Students

"I love this book!" "Look I can read this story all by myself!" "Watch me draw a rectangular prism with my finger!" "Listen to this cool song I learned about the solar system!" These are just a few of the phrases I get to hear each day. My students are all five and six year old kindergarteners and are EXTREMELY eager to learn! I teach at an inner city bilingual charter school. Imagine going to school for the first time as a five year old. Now imagine seeing letters, words, numbers, and maps for the first time. Now imagine learning all of this in English while also learning to read and write in Spanish! This is exactly what my amazing and talented students do each day! My students love to sing and dance during every lesson. The more hands-on the better! In such a technology-based world, it is so important to help them learn through technology as often as possible while still providing them with the basic tools needed in everyday learning. It is my goal to help them have access to everything they need to be the successful learners I know they are!

My Project

My students are young and eager to learn and grow. With the right materials at their fingertips they can learn to work together to solve problems. What better way to encourage team work, problem solving, and STEM learning than through building a roller coaster? The write and wipe stand up board will allow students the chance to draw out strategic designs for their own roller coaster. The STEM cards will present the children with a problem. Students will have to use the board and roller coaster pieces to create their own coaster design to get the car from the beginning to the end that the strategy card shows. This activity will help my students practice problem-solving and strategic planning. STEM is such an important part of their learning. This board and the coaster pieces will force students to find and create different ways to get from point A to point B. These materials will help my students expand their thinking and future. Using these materials will allow my kindergartners the opportunity to bring their personal creativity and strategic thinking to life with real world connections that will inspire and excite all children! Just think, maybe this will be the beginning of a future architect or engineer career for one of my students! !
