Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 6th grade students are on a Dual Language Immersion journey, most of them have been since the beginning of their academic career. The majority of the student population are POC and come from great academic need. They are kind, they are brilliant, they are multilingual, and they're working their hardest throughout a global pandemic that has shaken up their sense of normalcy. I couldn't have done what they're doing; they're some of the strongest tiny humans I know. They smile, they laugh, they try, and they just keep going. And they need all we can give them because in truth, they deserve more.

My Project

This library will provide students an opportunity to find comfort at their "just right" level and improve their language acquisition at their own pace. Students will be trusted to borrow and return books at their own leisure with the goal of fostering a new, healthy hobby that will help them in their academic careers. After a certain point, we thrust non-fiction at them and forget to offer them a fantastical reprieve -- please help me establish students' relationship with reading! I want them to find an escape from within our shared space that will stay with them for years to come!
