Building Our Classroom Library With Diverse Books! (Branch 2)
My students need books for our classroom library that represent them. My class is diverse- different cultures, different languages, different abilities and my students need a library they can see themselves in!
Meet my class- 34 second graders who love to learn and love to read! They come from diverse backgrounds. Our school has a student population that includes 67% of students who receive free/reduced lunch and 17% of students who are English Language Learners.
My students are part of an inclusive classroom community that welcomes all learners, and works as a family to help everyone achieve success!
Our class has 6 different home languages represented, 18 English Language Learners, and students with exceptional education needs.
My Project
Did you know that a study of children's books published in 2015 shows that 12.5% of these books featured non-human characters such as animals or trucks, and that 73.3% featured white characters? Books can shape children's experiences, and it is important that the books that we provide our students with demonstrate a wide variety of human experiences and cultures. Similarly, each of the children in my classroom deserve to see themselves reflected in the books they read.
My students need a classroom library that is diverse and reflects who they are.
My second graders are growing into independent readers. They are always seeking new books to catch their interest and keep them excited about reading. By seeing themselves in books, my students will grow in confidence, will grow as readers and will continue to grow as global citizens.
Stories that highlight fairness and diversity can increase empathy, and help the children to live with open hearts and open minds. These books will help us add this to our library!
