Building On The Foundation Of Fractions

My students need resources such as Fraction Number Lines and Giant Magnetic Fraction Pieces that accommodate their visual learning style and allow for hands-on manipulation to build conceptual understanding.

My Students

These highly energetic 5th graders are more visually inclined and learn math best when physical objects are accessible to help them make sense of problem-solving. I will surely share the resources across the grade-level so that 110+ 5th graders would have the opportunity to engage in such a powerful learning structure.

There may come a time when our students struggle with a certain activity, therefore we must find out to change the environment where they are equipped with the resources that match the real-world tasks at hand.

These students really enjoy highly engaging activities where they can utilize hands-on learning and accommodate their tactile learning strengths.

However, when we are engaged in solving real-world problems, we must be equipped with real world resources that we may be able to make relevant connections and improve retention of the concept.

My Project

Before transitioning my students to mastering 5th-grade fractions, I desire to provide them with more concrete learning aids to pull from their prior knowledge and deepen their conceptual understanding. I will need to assure that their understanding of 4th-grade fractions is solid and will serve as a foundation to add higher-level concepts.

The use of the "individual fraction number lines" will allow students to visually identify and compare fractions, thus developing skills in using visual models and adding and subtracting fractions.

While the "Giant Magnetic Fraction Pieces" serve as a valuable visual aid and an interactive anchor chart. These models will allow them to extend their visualization and further explore fraction equivalents, comparisons, and simple computations.
