Building On Our Middle School Ceramics Studio

My Students

I have been an art teacher for the past 14 years. My art students work hard each day to develop and improve on their artistic and visual literacy skills. One of the biggest challenges we face in our district is not having appropriate funds to run our program.

I have the opportunity to teach some extremely talented young artists.

They are excited, passionate, and hard working in the Visual Arts classroom. I teach all students in our building, including regular education students, special education students, and ESL students (including students who speak little to no English). We have the largest middle school in our district, and the number of students per Art class range from 20-30+students. Many of our students come from low income households and all different backgrounds.

My Project

My students love working in three dimensions, especially when we work with clay. I find our students become even more interested and passionate about the arts when we are working on a clay assignment. My students need earthenware low fire clay and glazes for pottery in my art classroom. With these requested supplies, my students will have the opportunity to create functional pottery for use at home, as well as sculptural pieces for display. I have had the opportunity to participate and write grants that have helped improve our ceramics studio at our school. We currently have a digital kiln to fire the clay and a pug mill to help us save and recycle clay for future use. The main problem we face at our school is the budget. With the materials becoming more costly year to year, and our budget diminishing, it is becoming more of a challenge to provide a solid 3-dimensional art program at our school. This is my personal artistic passion that I enjoy passing on to my students!

Many of my students are visual learners.

They find success in Art and it helps their self-esteem at such a difficult age (middle school). Your donations will help support our program and help our students grow as artists.
