My Project
I am excited to use these tools to build me relationships with my students, to help them open up and express themselves, and to help educate and empower them.
The materials I have chosen here represent the building blocks of my new school counseling practice!
The wobble stools will allow students to move their bodies as we talk and work. Many students who visit the counselors office have sensory needs and are diagnosed with conditions like ADHD. These chairs allow them to get proper stimulation and stay engaged.
The timer and the whiteboard calendar allow me to give these students a visual conceptualization of time for our sessions together.
Wipeable plastic cover sheets allow me to reuse worksheets and self-checkout forms, reducing waste.
Whiteboards will allow students to draw responses or write out answers to questions in all 3 tiers of counseling work - from classroom SEL lessons, to small groups to individual sessions!
The playdoh, blocks, and figurines will be used in play therapy sessions to encourage students to explore their experiences and emotions through their primary language - play!
A mini shredder is an invaluable emotion processing tool - we can write down worries, sad thoughts, etc and then the student can shred them! It also allows students to share things in writing they may not be comfortable to say aloud, then shred it to be sure things they need to communicate with me stay private.
The items I selected allow me to work with a variety of modalities to build therapeutic relationships with my students through play, through sensory and tactile experiences, and through language. These were chosen because they were tools I was taught to utilize during my masters program coursework.
