My diverse group of fifth grade students have one foot firmly planted in childhood, as they tentatively place another into their futures. The more I can actively engage them, the more they see education as an important step in the paths they are taking. junior high and high school are right around the corner, and we know sparking an interest early is important. Having the right materials to support their active learning and engagement is a critical part of that process.
My Project
My students often earn free time or have indoor recess. Rather than give them unlimited access to screen time, which they get plenty of at home, I want them to explore and work together.
These LEGOs will allow my students to work together and build creativity.
Puzzles are good thinking games and LEGOs are the ultimate puzzle. I've watched as students come together and discuss the best way to proceed on a build, collaborating in ways I couldn't just teach. Working together and talking face to face are 21st-century skills so many students are missing. Who knew LEGOs could build that! Beyond that, I can use them to teach volume in our math unit. Again, something a worksheet doesn't do.
