My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? At the age of 12, most of my students have not yet discovered books that capture their imaginations. They see reading as more of a chore than an opportunity, and I refuse to allow this to be the case.

I teach 115 7th graders at a Title I Middle School in North Carolina.

Over 95% of my students are on free/reduced lunch, and do not have books in their own homes. I have worked diligently to put together a very modest library in my classroom and have already received countless children asking me if it's possible they take a book home for the weekend. I want to be able to give this opportunity to each and everyone of my scholars so they feel that my classroom is a safe environment filled with the mission of high achievement and passionate learning.

My Project

I have created a list of books that my children have requested via a reading survey. The books I have on my wish list are books they have dreamed and hoped to read, but have not been able to. These books have a potential to in face change my scholars' lives, I believe reading is a gateway into anything in life, and increasing their reading level and expanding their learning will put them on a successful path to college. My scholars struggle tremendously in reading, most in part because they have not developed a love for it. I will not let this be the case this year for my scholars.

I had such an incredible turn out with my first project, and I know that by expanding my library even more, the possibilities for my scholars are endless.

My students have the potential to do anything they want to in life, and I have made it my priority as their teacher to give them every possible tool and resource that I have. Although the impact on my students cannot yet be entirely known, I know that every day my scholars read a book they love, their life is changing for the better.
