Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This year, I hope to launch the year by reading Solito, a memoir by Javier Zamora. This story of resilience captures the power of human dignity, kindness, and empathy. The majority of my students have been impacted by the current immigration crisis in America. Providing them with Javier Zamora's book, will serve two purposes; first it will empower them to build their own memoirs and see themselves in the author's shoes. Lastly, they will celebrate authentic writing by thinking critically about complex topics, and use Solito as a mentor text for developing their own writing skills. Students will participate in critical discussions as they analyze key themes, engage in creative activities while ensuring a safe and culturally responsive classroom environment for all.
