This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Studies have shown that students are better engaged and less stressed when they are standing in a classroom rather than sitting down at a desk all day. (Tanaka R, Noi S. "Effects of using standing desks for 45 minutes on the stress and executive function of elementary school students.") Students spend most of their day sitting down in nearly every class. My goal of having the standing whiteboards is to provide more opportunities for students to work in collaborative groups while standing up to do their work.

Another method for building mathematical thinking in my classrooms at a low floor and high ceiling level is to provide fun and challenging logic puzzles for students to work on.

Students often will require brain breaks after their long days in school and even small breaks during a rigorous math lesson. Rather than have my students spend their breaks scrolling through social media, I invite them to pick up a puzzle to solve individually or with their peers. These puzzles have many different challenge levels which allows students of all ranges find enjoyment while engaging in them. By gaming mathematical reasoning and logic skills, students feel confident in their ability to work on the math concepts that the state requires.

Students also often feel anxious in school, and especially so in math classrooms. By providing small fidget toys, this allows students to have a small escape while keeping them engaged in the lessons during class. Students will be able to fidget with one hand while taking notes or working on problems with another. Ultimately all of these things in conjunction will help promote and build mathematical thinking in my classroom.
