My Students
My students need to build bridges to the more challenging math classes in their future! I want to give my 4th and 5th grade students the opportunity to be motivated in math by letting them design and create wooden bridges and analyze the efficiency and strength of their bridges.
I am an art teacher at an urban Title 1 school.
My students are creative and enthusiastic and they definitely work best when they are working hands on. I know how important it is for my 5th and 6th graders to have a firm foundation in basic math skills so they can succeed in more challenging math classes in high school. I also know that this is their gateway to college. Many of my students are lacking the motivation and the basic skills to do well in math. I know they can do better!
My Project
The bridge building supplies and tools will teach my students geometry, physics, technology education, math, and general science as well as self-confidence and motivation. In art class I plan to motivate my students by having a school- wide bridge building contest for the entire 5th and 6th grades. My students will learn how to design and build bridges but most importantly they will learn how to analyze their bridges.
By donating to this bridge building project you will enable my 5th and 6th grade students to obtain much needed math skills.
They will learn these skills the way children learn best, through hands on direct experience. By learning to build bridges my students will learn to love math and to use math in the real world.
