Building Math Bridges with S-team Art & Technology Project
My students need 10 portraits of orphans from Russia through the Memory Project & an iPad Pro to draw their portraits with pattern backgrounds using technology, math concepts in a service learning project.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students eat their breakfast at school each morning before they come to my class. Fuel in their bodies makes them ready to learn and start the day. The school serves free breakfast for 85% of the students and they get to the school early to eat the breakfast that they don’t get at home.
These students are 11- and 12-year-old boys and girls, growing, trying, experiencing, experimenting, challenging and ultimately becoming educated in my classroom.
My classes are all year so I can work with these students in depth with technology, get to know their strengths and weaknesses, and see their creativity develop as their experience with art increases.
They are in uniform and some kids have uniforms that fit and are clean and others have uniforms that are too big, too small and don't really look clean. The majority of kids are happy and energetic and ready to learn. Some students have trouble staying awake and staying focused.
My Project
Drawing portraits of orphans in a different country with The Memory Project is an art project we do every year around November thanks to funding through Donors Choose: students remember all they have and what they can give as a precious gift to an orphan (Russia this year) in another country that does not have as much as they do.
A drawing on an iPad of themselves from a photograph we receive is a treasure for an orphan in Russia and students making the portraits will benefit by learning how to use a digital program, learn about translations, symmetrical, asymmetrical patterns, parallel, perpendicular lines with their portraits they create and give.
This is an meaningful gift to them to give and receive this time of year. These are kids that don’t have parents to photograph them and to build memories of their childhood. They will receive a digital, printed color drawing created by someone their own age and it is very much something they will have to keep the rest of their life. In return The Memory Project sends back a video to our school of the delivery of the portraits.
This year we are doing all the portraits on iPads from the digital art class as well as the art 1 class. It is such a positive, productive, learning experience for students to participate in producing, giving and building relationships with a country that does not have the best relationship with the United States. Bridges built with projects like this will open up communication for the orphans in Russia from the students creating their portraits in the United States.
