My Students

"Teacher, I'm finished! What can I do now?" These are words every teacher hates to hear. The answer? Independent learning centers. Learning centers provide an excellent pathway to increase student motivation and provide extra practice in math, science and literacy in a fun and engaging way.

My students are natural born scientists, curious about the world around them and are always asking questions.

Our school is small, approximately 350 students, which is not the norm in California. We have an amazing and supportive principal. My students are eager to learn and their brains are sponges that absorb any and all information given to them. Everything is a potential investigation/experiment to them so I strive to provide my students with as many learning and project based opportunities as possible. I want to enhance the school curriculum and students' intrinsic motivation to learn more. We are a Title 1 school, but because of our size, funding levels are not as high as other schools that have higher enrollments. With the help of parent volunteers and other sources, our school thrives and student achievement is high. We're the best little school in CA. We believe that the future lies in our children, that they have virtually unlimited potential, and our job is to enable them to reach it.

My Project

A goal of my classroom and our school is to create environments that support the students' desire for lifelong learning. Science and math learning centers in the classroom serve as an excellent pathway to increase student motivation so that the children will take ownership for their learning. The students in my classroom are eager and highly motivated to learn. Our classroom environment is such that children are encouraged to be independent thinkers and learn how to manage their time and assignments. Throughout the day, students work in whole groups, small groups, partner and individual learning situations. At the learning centers, students will work on math or science content, in addition to enhancing literacy skills. The centers will also provide students with challenges, investigations and explorations that can and will lead to future research opportunities.

As a teacher, my goal is to provide as many resources to my students as possible.

This project will give my class additional materials in math, science and literacy that will support various student developmental stages and learning styles throughout the curriculum.
