This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is nestled in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, IL. With a population of just over 300 students in preschool-8th grade, it is a joy walking through the halls and being able to greet each student by their name.
We felt the support and love of our community last summer when our preschool cluster classroom was threatened to close.
The parents of our community spoke out to advocate for our diverse learners and families who benefit from these services, and won the fight for our preschoolers!
In our classroom, we are in need of new furniture and flexible seating for our kiddos. In order to create and maximize our environment for learning, I’d like to create a comfy, cozy library space to meet the sensory needs for our students while independently browsing or looking at a book with a buddy. Our preschoolers love to read and with the new library space, will be able to enjoy books we read aloud in class together in a space they can enjoy.
My Project
I am requesting supplies for a comfortable library area in our classroom to promote early literacy. There is something so special about a child handing you a book to read to them, which I hope to do in our new classroom library.
Most of the furniture and supplies in our preschool classroom are outdated, and my students with sensory needs require more flexible seating.
With bean bag and wobble chairs available in the library, it is my goal to see more of my kiddos in the calm, safe space created by this project. We are lucky enough to have amazing books available to our diverse learners and I hope to take full advantage of the wide variety that is available to them!
