Building Literacy In Biology: Oh The Places We Will Go!

My Students

"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." Dr. Seuss

My students attend an urban, charter high school that serves a low income, high-needs population.

Most of my students receive free and reduced lunches and their families often struggle to meet the basic needs of their children. Though multi-talented and extremely motivated, many students struggle in reading and comprehension and as a result, do not enjoy reading books of any kind. Our school has no library and the only books available to the students are at the public library which is not easily accessible to most of my students. The current budget crisis are drastically effecting the resources that I have available in my classroom. We need engaging, inspiring, motivational books to read during our literacy time!

My Project

Skills in reading comprehension and writing are often left for the English class. When students are behind grade level in these areas, a cross-curricular plan of action is necessary. My project will provide a foundational library available for students who cannot access other reading materials during our literacy time. They will have a choice of books in a variety of different science-related topics and on several different reading levels. The books are high-interest and captivating, which will create a desire to read more! Through guided discussions and book reviews, students will leave feedback for other classmates and work on their writing skills in the process.

Skills in reading and writing are crucial to become a functional member of society.

Help me provide an opportunity for all of my students to have access to reading material that will spark their interest and propel them toward future success!
