This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We live in an ever-increasing visual world. We are constantly exposed to images. Images are all around us...on tvs, computers, phones, newspapers, books, billboards, etc... To help my students better understand the modern world, I provide activities that foster visual literacy. Visual literacy is the ability to understand and produce visual messages. It is a staple of 21st century skills. How can we give our students 21st skills without the proper tools?
We have some of the most creative, artistic, and inspiring students around.
Our students live on the Lower East Side but have roots from around the world—China, Bangladesh, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic—just to name a few. We are an exciting bunch! Many of our students are working on learning a second language. Our school has a dual language program for Mandarin and Spanish. The diversity in our students makes for an exciting learning environment for all, especially in the art room.
My Project
Our artists, grades Kindergarten through fifth grade, will increase their imagination and knowledge of the art world when exploring new books in their art classroom library.
Many of our students have spent the last year and a half reading on devices due to the pandemic.
I am passionate about giving my students opportunities to return to the more traditional way to read. I want students to have the chance to hold books in their hands; I want them to hold books closely while exploring its pictures and words. Who can resist a good book that you hold in your own hand? This is why I want to build my art room library with new and beautiful picture books. The books in our project connect to the topics our students are learning in the art room. The books include stories about art and artists. The new books in our library will support our students' love of learning art and literacy. Your support will help our art library grow reaching more learners!
