This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever been excited to open a magazine because it had information you really wanted to learn about? I want my children to feel that kind of excitement when they learn how to read.
My students live in an urban setting where it is difficult to grow up.
Most of my students get free lunch at school and are eligible for public assistance. As a teacher, I would love to break the cycle of poverty by educating my students and giving them tools to survive in our tough economy. As a first grade teacher, I am fortunate to get my students when they are still curious and ready to experience the world in a positive way. It is my job not to spoil it by showing them that learning to read can be fun.
My Project
As a reading teacher, I know that the only way to get a child to read on his or her own is to tap into their curiosities and their hobbies. I strongly believe that reading for information is key. If the information is interesting it will motivate the child to continue to read on his/her own. I would love to receive the Time magazine and the Weekly Reader for my children. Each child will have his/her own copy that they will be able to take home and share with their families each month.
My project is so important because it builds a strong foundation for reading curiosity.
If we as adults build strong readers who are confident and curious, we can break the vicious cycle of poverty one child at a time.
