This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is an inner-city school. We serve a diverse population of students and families.
We serve a student population of English Language Learners and with many students living at or below the poverty line.
Since our school serves a very high population of economically disadvantaged families who face many unique challenges, the staff at the school partners with families to not only support students' academic needs but social and emotional needs as well. Despite language barriers, they come to school eager to learn.
My Project
My students are needing new big books. In my class, we use big books as often as we can, but we are in need of more. Our current ones have been loved so much the pages are coming out. When we read a big book, students can easily see the words for where they are sitting and engage in the stories' pictures. Big books are filled with sight words and repetitive phrases that allow for shared reading and for kids to begin to read one their own. These books become favorites and remain favorites throughout the school year.
My kindergarten students are beginning to recognize themselves as readers, but struggle to find the confidence to read independently.
Word Family Big books are a great way to for children to build. Many picture books encourage children to tell the story by looking at the pictures- not the words. My students have mastered this skill and are ready to look at the WORDS in their books. If early readers are given books with words that are too hard for them, they get frustrated and begin to think that they'll never read. These books will show my students that they CAN read!
