Building Learners Through Creative Opportunities

Help me give my students crafting and LEGO! Creativity builds language and one of our favorite activities was painting wooden ornaments last winter. They LOVE to build...but I don't have any LEGO in my speech & language space!

My Project

I work with over 45 students in kindergarten through grade 6 at an elementary school in Rome, NY for Speech & Language Therapy. My students come to the speech/language room to work on building the foundational speech and language skills they need to be effective and functional communicators, listeners, readers, writers, students, and community members.

Lesson planning gets tricky with 7 grade levels and even more ability levels within that!

The two things that I can always count on being a hit and incorporating ANY speech and language goal for ANY student:

1. Crafts!

2. STEAM activities/building toys - LEGO!

Through activities like these, I can incorporate so much language work: vocabulary, following directions, sequencing, cause/effect, compare/contrast, describing, sentence building, asking/answering questions, social communication with peers and adults...the list goes on and on!

My students take pride in creations they make, but do not always have opportunities outside of the school setting to access crafting materials. One of their favorite simple activities last winter was making wooden ornaments they could take home and share with their families. I'd love to continue this tradition and also expand it beyond winter to incorporate additional seasons and seasonal vocabulary.

My students LOVE all STEAM-related activities when they have the chance to do them in my therapy space! A common request is to build with LEGOs...but I don't currently have any!
