Building Language Through Play

My students need a new dollhouse and accessories to build language skills and social skills.

My Students

The students in the classroom are learners with special needs.

They qualify to receive special services in a preschool setting to help prepare them for their future school career.

Many of the students come from a low income background. They haven't had a typical childhood with the challenges they face. This classroom provides a safe environment for them where they can learn and grow. Preschool is a place to learn many skills before entering into the big, demanding world of elementary school. For those with special needs, the day is filled with challenges that exceed your typical child's. All of the students face developmental delays. This affects their ability to do day-to-day activities that children their age can independently do.

My Project

Students in my class all have deficits in their language abilities. Currently, we have an old Little Tikes dollhouse that is quite outdated and has many broken pieces that we are constantly trying to repair.

Many language skills can be targeted through play using a dollhouse.

Students build their vocabulary as they label dolls and accessories. Basic concepts such as prepositions, size, and shapes can be taught using this type of play. Students learn the use of verbs as they manipulate the dolls. Other areas of language that are supported through the use of play with a dollhouse include: answering "wh" questions, part/whole relationships, following/giving directions, and social/pragmatic skills.

Having this dollhouse and the accessories will allow students to work on these skills. I've chosen multiracial dolls to represent all of my students. I've also chosen a smaller, more simple dollhouse for my toddler age students which will allow them to more easily manipulate objects age appropriately.
