Building Language Through American Sign Language: We Have a Voice
Help me give my students American Sign Language resources to communicate in school, their homes and in a hearing dominant community because they matter.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are deaf and hard of hearing in grades K through 5. My students are awesome! They are hard working and dedicated each and every day to learning. They come to school excited to learn and communicate with their peers using a language that is rarely understood at home but understood in their school community. My students face many challenges; socially, economically, physically, and academically. They come to school anticipating what new words they will learn and take home. They are excited to go home and use the vocabulary learned, to interact with their family members who are hearing and struggle communicating with their children.
We all have a voice: Every student should have an opportunity to be heard.
My students come from many different backgrounds. Some have a moderate proficiency of the English language, while some have no proficiency of the English language. Through different hearing devices such as hearing aids, cochlear implants and the use of American Sign Language, my students are showing great success in their academic learning. A foundation of language is being developed.
My Project
Your donation will play a vital part in my students' progress in learning language. The signing time DVD's volume 1 and 2 are filled with exceptional visual learning tools in acquiring vocabulary and language usage. The DVDs teach the English word of an object, followed by the ASL sign for that object. It also shows how to use the word in context by showing where you can find the object, what it looks like, and how to use the word in a sentence. The DVDs also incorporates learning language through music which our younger children sometimes depend on. The DVDs cover categories such as feelings/emotions, foods, around the house, community helpers and many more important categories.
Learning to communicate should not be optional.
Communication is necessary and vital to living a productive life. The flashcards and books will also be used for small group instruction, as well as an intervention for students continuously struggling to make progress. The books and flashcards I am requesting will be essential for creating materials for take home vocabulary reinforcement practice. The books and flashcards gives an opportunity for parents to also practice and interact with their child. Your donation will promote communication and incorporating language at school and at home.
