This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"It is important for your children of all ages to love learning, and we do know that children love to play. If learning and play are taught together, children will automatically love to learn." ~ Dr. Sylvia Rimm

My students are very young children with special needs, most of whom have speech delays or autism.

They are the most lovable bunch of sweet hearts trying their best to communicate their thoughts and ideas. I strive to provide a social skills based preschool program that is saturated with language opportunities whenever and wherever possible. Through the use of play and modeling appropriate language, encouraging children to use their words, and practicing social skills, the children in my class can learn about themselves and the world around them.

My Project

With the use of a dollhouse and dolls, my students will link several actions with the dolls in sequence such as feeding the doll, bathing the doll, and then putting the doll to bed. This sort of pretend play is a hugely important part of their cognitive development. Additionally, I will use the baby dolls, a dollhouse and furniture (bed, blankets) to teach some basic concepts like: prepositions, colors, and size concepts. By employing the dollhouse within facilitated play opportunities, the children can use the dolls and furniture (bed, bottle, clothes) to learn verbal concepts like eat, drink, sleep, sit, stand, hungry, sleepy, thirsty, etc. For example: Is the baby hungry? We should give him something to eat! While the children play, they can engage in many important tasks, such as developing and practicing newly acquired skills, using language, taking turns, making friends, and regulating emotions and behavior according to the demands of the situation.

It is my goal to help children ultimately develop a love for learning through multiple ways of acquiring developmental skills, including play based skills.

Once children learn these basic skills they can then move on to succeed in the world while enjoying the learning process.
